The significance of Jesus’ death for us, why did Jesus die in the first place? What did he seek to accomplish by coming to die for us? There was a time in history when everything was perfect including our first Parents. Unfortunately. Due to their disobedience, sin was introduced into this world and death was the effect, not necessarily this death experienced by those around us now, which the bible term as sleep or the first death but eternal death. Infinite Love intercepted the penalty for Man’s sake to deliver man from death and from him who had the power of death. You know when was younger, I always thought that the God of the old testament was very angry, and vengeful against us and always needed appeasement. But, Jesus was the one that saved us from the anger of God by His death. How wrong was I! For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life(John3:16). Jesus was sent that He may deliver us from sin(Matt. 1:21) and the power of Death. Infinite Love had reconciled the world unto Himself through His Son, Jesus, for Jesus says ” He that hath seen Me, hath seen the Father”(John 14:9). God truly so love us that He gave His only begotten Son to die for us. Such love! We are unworthy subjects of such love. Sometimes am led to think that God loves us more than His Son. God is truly Love.
Another significance of Jesus’ death on the cross is God’s Justice is based on His Law, the Ten commandments, and sin being the transgression of God’s Law which pays its full wages in death(Romans 3:23), which we deserve. But the Gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ, Who was made sin for us, Who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him(1 Cor. 5:21). Jesus suffered the equivalent of the second death with its guilt and shame that we may live with Him in glory. Such love and Justice! Truly, as the psalmist said, “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other”. (Psalms 85:10). The law is unchangeable, God providing a means of salvation for the law-breakers like me does not in the least detract from the dignity of the Law which is the transcript of God’s character, since the penalty of man’s transgression was borne by a divine Substitute, Jesus. The Father Himself suffered with the Son; for “God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself”. Through the atonement of the Son of God alone could power be given to man to establish him in righteousness, and make him a fit subject for heaven. The blood of Christ is the eternal antidote for sin. The offensive character of sin is seen in what it cost the Son of God in humiliation, in suffering and, in death. The promise of salvation given to our parents was indeed fulfilled at the cross. Praise God! My worth is truly not in what I own but in the costly wounds of Christ at the cross, in Christ alone, my hope is found and I will rejoice in my Redeemer forever! Knowing what led to my Saviour’s death has melted my soul in love and submission, now am ever determined to learn to hate what caused my Saviour to die and love His Commands, so help me, Lord.
